Young Innovator unlocks technology to promote food security and job creation in local communities

Published on October 25, 2017

On a balmy afternoon in early October, the Hub accompanied John Kirigiti, a 28-year-old innovator from Tanzania on a visit to his workshop in Dar es Salaam. Overlooking the ocean, John’s sprawling workplace includes a solar drying platform for vegetables, an innovation that clinched him 2nd place at the USAID East Africa Postharvest Competition held in May 2017 in Kenya.

John recently showcased his solar drying technology at the Hub-sponsored Africa Grain Trade Summit (AGTS) 2017 convention in Dar es Salaam. There, John shared his innovation with Africa’s leading agricultural stakeholders, including Hon. Dr. Charles John Tizeba, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the United Republic of Tanzania.

John was able to make four new trade linkages that he is excited to pursue. In the video below, we catch up with John to find out how he has been progressing with his technology, and its impact on his community.
