Trendy yet traditional, East African home decor companies on display at Ambiente trade show

Published on February 09, 2016

On February 12, three East African home décor companies will join the Hub’s home décor technical advisor in Frankfurt, Germany to display their products at the Ambiente trade show, an international consumer goods fair that draws the latest designs and innovations. It also boasts more than 130,000 trade visitors who come to see the newest market trends and source global products.Mohazo_OA_s.jpg

Zohra Baraka, Managing Director of Mohazo, discusses her products (foreground of photo) at the Origin Africa trade show in Nairobi, Kenya.

Zohra Baraka, Managing Director of Mohazo, based in Kenya, is excited to present her African inspired handicrafts to a global market.

“Our home décor, accessories and gift packages are unique, high-quality, and affordable,” said Ms.Baraka.

The three Hub-supported companies are similar in that they meld traditional African influences with a modern flair; they are also export-ready with the capacity to deliver high-quality, custom products on time to international buyers.

Olivia Knox, from Uganda, fashions gorgeous home décor pieces from Ankole long-horned cows, a breed historically raised by nomadic tribes in Uganda.

Through creating new markets for Ankole horn, we are improving the economic value of this culturally significant breed — providing incentive for Ugandan ranchers to continue their ancient practice of raising the Ankole,” as stated on the home webpage of Olivia Knox.

Sammy Abdella, from Ethiopia, works with talented weavers and artisans to create beautiful, original textiles using traditional hand looms. His sells his products under the name Negist Ethiopia. His products have been featured in Anthropologie, Barneys NY, Calypso and Eileen Fisher. In addition to luxury accessories, Sammy has also developed a high-end home furnishings line made by the skilled craftsmanship of Ethiopian artisans.

"It is exciting to attend Ambiente with our clients from Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.  I believe the European audience will be excited to see the beauty and unique products we have to offer that both complement a modern home furnishing assortment while also offering something new to their customers," said Llenay Ferreti, home décor and fashion advisor for the East Africa Trade and Investment Hub.
