The fashionable blue jeans from Ethiopia's Velocity Apparelz attracted an energetic crowd at the recent Sourcing at Magic trade show - the largest apparel sourcing trade show in North America. The Hub-sponsored African Pavilion was abuzz with activity. U.S. buyers were eager to meet entrepreneurs from the continent, which many people see as a sourcing destination. The African Pavilion hosted representatives from 35 apparel companies from across Africa. Conversations here focused on the "Africa Advantage," most notably the duty-free benefits of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which was recently extended for ten years.
"We will be the biggest in Africa and one of the most modern factories worldwide," said General Manager of Production Emilio Di Maio.
Velocity secured a $3 million-plus contract from a U.S. buyer during the trade show. What is Velocity Apparelz? For that, we need to visit Mekele, Ethiopia. Here's their story.
