Farmers underutilise smartphone potential to reboot agriculture

Despite a wide penetration of mobile phone subscribers in the country, only three-per cent of smallholder farmers seek information related to crop protections while over 90pc use to make calls, a new study has shown.

In a National Survey and Segmentation of Smallholder Households in Tanzania, “Understanding their demand for financial, agricultural and digital solutions” released by OCGAP yesterday shows smallholder farmers had not tapped potentials of mobile phones.

The number of mobile phone subscribers rose by 16 pc in 2014 to 31.86 million, according to report by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). But eighty-two per cent of smallholder farmers used mobile phone last year. Read more. Source | Daily News
