EU trade agreements, not TPP, threaten US-Africa trade

MGO: If the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement is signed, will that negate some of the benefits of AGOA for African countries?

Investors don’t see a direct threat of competition from the TPP. The companies I talk to that are planning their investment in Africa under AGOA are not concerned. It’s not about "AGOA versus TPP" - it’s “We want to be in Africa.” I’m not aware of any investor that is holding back from light manufacturing in an AGOA country to wait and see what happens with the TPP.

Where are we going to see the most activity related to AGOA?

Light manufacturing – apparel for sure is the principal one. Ethiopia is attracting a lot of attention from apparel producers but then you have Kenya and Madagascar as well.
