From May 31 – June 2, the Hub hosted a pavilion at the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY) showcasing Ethiopia’s strength in footwear manufacturing. Six Ethiopian companies attracted U.S. buyers and investors with their impressive displays of quality footwear. Ethiopia has a developed leather industry and investors have become increasingly interested in establishing factories there. The Hub’s support of Ethiopian companies at FFNY contributes to its goal of increasing footwear exports to the U.S. Ethiopia has become the top African exporter of footwear to the U.S.
“The Hub is involved in all aspects of economic development for East Africa based out of Kenya. Our responsibility is to develop export and trading opportunities for Africa and our international partners, build opportunities for employment in our trade and development sectors…especially leather and footwear,” said Jordan Saliman, Hub’s Footwear Advisor.
There has been a lot of uncertainty in global sourcing destinations. Africa, and especially Ethiopia, represents an opportunity for development. Duty-free imports through AGOA provides cost-savings for U.S. buyers and helps Africa's competitiveness.
"FFANY is delighted to have collaborated with the Discover Ethiopia booth and the Hub at the New York Shoe Expo. I love what you are doing to promote this emerging source of quality footwear, and the brands which have shown interest are certainly a testament to the potential. We look forward to working with East Africa in future shows," said Phyllis Rein, Executive Vice President. Fashion Footwear Association of New York
