Regional manufacturers have called on East African Community (EAC) governments to put in place punitive policies to deter counterfeiting and illicit trade, saying the vices were inhibiting the sector’s growth.
Denis Karera, the chairman of the East African Business Council, said the industrialists also urged regional governments to promote use of products made within the EAC bloc.
“The idea is to encourage our people to consume products manufactured in the region to support industries so that they are able to grow to create more jobs for East Africans and boost revenue collections,” Karera said in telephone interview after the first East African Manufacturing Business Summit last week in Kampala, Uganda.
