Lorine Nanjala from TREK Science Ltd was among the top 25 innovators in the East Africa Postharvest Technology Competition 2017.
Technology: Biological Insecticide
The technology is an easy-to-use, effective, biodegradable and environmentally friendly biological insecticide that targets maize-destroying insects in granaries and silos without harm to the end-user. It consists of artificial pellets that lure insects, intoxicate and kill them. The technology addresses the challenge of postharvest grain losses due to damage by storage insect pests.
Impact : Produced in 2015, it has not been field tested but laboratory tested with 2 sample sizes of 750 pests. In the first sample, over 80% of the pests were killed. 60% of the pests in the second sample had deterred feeding. The active compounds within the insecticide were tested for 21 days and demonstrated potency against the target pests in the said period.
