Technology : Ocimum Species Stored Grains Protector

This technology involves the use of four different plant materials (fresh whole leaves, dried whole leaves, dried ground leaves and essential oils extracts of Ocimum Suave,Ocimum kenyense, Ocimum kilimandscharicum and Ocimum americanum to protect stored grains against post-harvest pests through repellency and mortality. Some of the major compounds found in Ocimum species (such as Camphor, linalool, 1,8-Cineole, Camphene and Eugenol) have been found to be effective repellents and toxicants against major insect pests. Milled dry leaves of the species also provide effective control of the pests.

Impact : Produced in 2015, the technology has been tested amongst over one hundred farmers and the results have been impressive. It has enabled them reduce pest infestation and take control of health issues associated with synthetic pesticides. The harvesting, drying and extraction of the oils takes approximately one week. Effectiveness of the applied oils starts immediately. Mortality is noticeable within five minutes while repellency is immediate.
